Diedra L. Barnett has served as the principal of Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School since 2023 and has been an employee of Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) since 2005. Barnett is a lifelong educator, reading specialist and believes in servant leadership. Her tenure with CCPS includes transformative roles at Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, Dr. Gustavus Brown and Gale-Bailey elementary schools, where she served as the reading resource teacher. Barnett also held positions as assistant principal and principal at J.P. Ryon Elementary School before arriving at Mitchell.

A native of Bennettsville, S.C., Barnett completed her undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina and holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from McDaniel College. In her role as principal, Barnett is dedicated to collaborating with students, staff, parents and community members to ensure every student receives a challenging education that fosters their development as productive members of society and lifelong learners.
